Ahh, the actors, this is what many of you wait for, even more so than the pictures themselves. Actors have a way of making us feel extreme emotion. They pull us in so we don’t think of the actor, but enjoy the character and believe we are a fly on the wall watching them at their strongest, weakest, and most emotion filled moments.
BEST ACTOR
Nominees:
• Jeff Bridges - "True Grit"
• Robert Duvall - "Get Low"
• Jesse Eisenberg - "The Social Network"
• Colin Firth - "The King's Speech"
• James Franco - "127 Hours"
• Ryan Gosling - "Blue Valentine"
What a great group of talent here. It seems like every year this group is filled with folks I would like to see win the award. Duvall’s performance in Get Low is what we’ve come to expect, but against some of these young upstarts, it’s happy to be nominated. Bridges who won last year for Crazy Heart will probably come up short here, but you never know. Ryan Gosling is one performance away from the big one, but deserves to be mentioned in this group. Eisenberg is Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network and if the film starts to sweep awards, it could show up here as well. Firth just keep delivering award worthy performances year after year. The King’s Speech shows that ANYTHING the man does should be considered.
All that said, I really think for those that experienced the film 127 Hours know that this was on Franco’s back. To engage, to feel, to be enlightened and to show emotion all depended on Franco’s talents and he’d be my choice here, but what about my colleagues? I think Firth might be theirs, but we’ll see.

• Noomi Rapace - "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
• Michelle Williams - "Blue Valentine"
There are some truly standout performances in this category as well. We could, have another tie in this category as votes will fly everywhere. And if not a tie, this may be decided by a handful of votes. I think Michelle Williams and Noomi Rapace are great additions, but probably won’t win the category. It comes down to 4 ladies for the award. Natalie Portman is absolutely magnificent in Black Swan. Even people who may not have liked the film have to admit she was amazing. Seeing Jennifer Lawrence take on such a big role at a young age almost boggles the mind. Annette Bening delivers one of her best performances in a movie that seems to be flying under the radar a bit though was talked about as deserving to be here MONTHS ago. And for those that could sit through a really hard topic, Nicole Kidman will take your heart and tie it in knots with her role in Rabbit Hole.
I’ve got to think this is Natalie Portman’s award. The group gave Black Swan the most nominations and she was at the crux of that situation. Though any of those top 4 could garner enough support to take home the award.

I really like Christian Bale in The Fighter. There, I said it! It is the best film I’ve seen this year, and his performance is one of the best in any acting category. I think he wins this award and he is well deserving of it. However, if there is an upset one of many scenarios could take place. Andrew Garfield could ride a wave of The Social Network love and win for his turn. Jeremy Renner was good, but this was no The Hurt Locker role in The Town. Sam Rockwell actually I think had a role in Conviction that was bigger and better than the film itself. Mark Ruffalo was an early favorite before the momentum slowed for The Kids Are All Right. Geoffrey Rush could steal this, as he played effortlessly off of Colin Firth in a movie that has a lot of love out there.
Wait, I said it already…Christian Bale, The Fighter.

• Jacki Weaver - "Animal Kingdom"
The Fighter had such strong acting talents that two of the women got nominations in this category. Amy Adams as the girlfriend that breaks into Mickey Ward’s inner circle and Melissa Leo as the mother who has someone’s best interests at heart…the only question is whose? Helena Bonham Carter has a solid role in The King’s Speech, it’s just understated compared to the other nominees. Jacki Weaver steals the show in Animal Kingdom, but there are too many heavy hitters here. Mila Kunis provides the perfect companion to Natalie Portman in Black Swan. And Hailee Steinfeld – at a young age – performs in virtually every scene in the amazing True Grit.
Ok…the tough part….who wins? I’d love to see one of the two from The Fighter (but I think they will split votes). Could lead to a Mila Kunis surprise for the loved Black Swan. But – if I had to reallllllllly make a prediction….realllllllly….I’d say Hailee Steinfeld wins for her amazing performance in True Grit. Though…she is also up for the best young actor/actress and she could win that and this award go to Mila. Am I confused? Yes, yes I am!
Tomorrow, finally…Best Pic, Doc, Animated, Foreign, Director AND the Screenplays.

Look, this is a talented group of men. Top to bottom it is solid. But the one performance that really blew me away this year was Albert Brooks in Drive. I felt equally afraid of his character as well as confident that he was the trustworthy father figure. Nolte back in the saddle with Warrior is a crowd favorite. Patton Oswalt was truly one of my favorites, if not for Brooks. It is a solid change with Serkis getting a nomination for his performance in Rise of Planet of the Apes; nice to see him alongside veterans Branagh and Plummer in this category.Kenneth Branagh – “My Week With Marilyn”

I would not be disappointed by any winner here. Carey Mulligan is always good and Berenice Bejo could ride a tidal wave for The Artist. Chastain, if you could cover her roles in all her films might walk away the winner here (I liked her in Take Shelter more than in this film). Octavia Spencer was fantastic in The Help as well, but with two actresses here, that’s never an easy road to take to a win. McCarthy is loved here, and it may be the way for our group to award the fresh and funny Bridesmaids. For me…Woodley should win but it is truly WIDE OPEN.Berenice Bejo – “The Artist”

All five of these movies made my “Top 25” for the year. I’m not sure what everyone uses as their criteria for voting in this category. Myself, I look for the whole of the cast. Not what is necessarily the best film, but which needed the whole “team” of actors to make the film go. With that in mind, this is a pretty good list. In this group, I think it’s the place where the whole of the cast for The Help gets awarded. Just about everyone loved this film and it took all characters here to bring together their varied roles and experiences to bubble your emotions to the surface. While the rest are all pretty darned good, some will have their day in other categories.The Artist

An interesting category here and it will be a look at where the rest of the night may go. If Jean Dujardin takes home the award, it might be a big night for The Artist. However, I think there were better performances here. I would lean towards our group going toward Gosling, Pitt or Clooney. Gosling with the pure number of nominations for Drive, he has a lot of support, and could walk away with the top award. Clooney is a favorite for my favorite film of the year. And as of this writing, I STILL haven’t chosen between him and the amazing performance of Brad Pitt in Moneyball. Yes I know Leo is nominated here too, but sorry Leo, not with this group. And…lest I leave him out…Michael Fassbender is really, really good in Shame so much so that I wouldn’t be ashamed of him as the winner here. Oh and by the way…I think the rule was we had to nominate actors from films with no more than two word titles…now that is some DEEP analysis!George Clooney – “The Descendants”

And finally for this list, the ladies and I have to admit, I know not where our group will go. Heck, I know not where my vote will fall – so I naturally assume that people are having the same feelings as I am. (As an aside, it’s nice to have some races that truly could go any way right now..but back to the analysis.) Viola Davis is the heart and soul of The Help. Elizabeth Olsen was a revelation in Martha Marcy May Marlene (though it’s a mouthful of a title). Meryl, well, she is Meryl and becomes Maragaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Tilda Swinton walks through the aftermath of pure horror in both the before and after in We Need to Talk About Kevin. Charlize Theron was fun and depressing all in one film (Young Adult) and they let her look good again. And I know some who were in love with Michelle Williams in My Week With Marilyn. Who should I vote for??? I’m leaning toward Elizabeth Olsen, but I could change my mind any way before the ballot is in. This would be an EASY category for me if….Rooney Mara was nominated for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo…my favorite performance by a female this year…but….Viola Davis – “The Help”
