Home Screening Room -The Muppets are Most Wanted but The Railway Man is a Hidden Gem

Posted by Unknown On Tuesday, 11 August 2015 0 comments
It's a good week to bring home some Muppet adventures. Plus my hidden gem is truly a great little film that is not to be missed anywhere.

Pick Of The Week
If you pick one movie this week … this is it.

Muppets Most Wanted / Rated PG / Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey
What’s next for The Muppets? Why, a fancy world tour booked by new tour manager Dominic Badguy. Of course, his name is “bad guy,” so something is afoot. And so the caper begins. Where is the real Kermit? With what seems to be an increased musical-number presence, this effort still finds a way to use the wide cast of characters, creating a fun romp for the whole family. If you like the Muppets, you must check it out. I'm disappointed that Disney didn't send along a copy, because I could go in more depth about what you get with the Blu-ray. (Grade: B)

Also This Week
Bears / Rated G / Narrated by John C. Reilly
Disneynature’s latest follows a mother bear named Sky and her cubs as they journey in the Alaskan wilderness. You’ll see the bears work to find food and avoid a predator wolf, among other slice-of-nature moments.

A Haunted House 2 / Rated R / Marlon Wayans, Jaime Pressly
Malcolm is starting life over with his new girlfriend, Megan, in a new house. Only the paranormal forces that plagued him in the first house are back, too, and he must try to protect his new family against the craziness that ensues.

Plus
Batman: Assault on Arkham / Rated PG-13 / Voices of Kevin Conroy, Tara Strong
Breathe In / Rated R / Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones
The Blacklist: The Complete First Season / Not Rated / James Spader, Megan Boone
Filth / Rated R / James McAvoy, Jamie Bell

Rage / Not Rated / Nicolas Cage, Rachel Nichols

Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Rated PG /

Hidden Gem
The Railway Man / Rated R / Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman
He was an officer in the British Army who was tortured during World War II. Now, having met the woman of his dreams riding the rails, he is confronted with his past demons. Can he get beyond his horrific experiences in time to save his relationship?  This is truly a touching and at times heartbreaking film that caught me off guard. Didn't know a thing about it when I sat down to screen the film and the performance by Colin Firth alone will make you feel the gravity of what he is dealing with. Amazing and well worth a look now on Blu-ray and DVD. This WOULD be my pick of the week if you were looking for a film for just adults.

Home Screening Room - Going Birding!
By Paul Hall

After a really .... long absence.... other commitments and the like...hopefully I"m back! And I'm glad to be back this week .. as my pick of the week is also a kind of hidden gem. Loved it.

Pick Of The Week
If you pick one movie this week … this is it.

A Birder’s Guide to Everything / Rated PG-13 / Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ben Kingsley
David lost his mom at a young age and now, at age 15, his dad is about to movie on and remarry. He faces all the struggles of any teenage boy and copes with many as a birder. The high school club sets out to find the rare bird that David has sighted, but they could never imagine that there is so much more to be discovered. One of the sweetest coming of age films I’ve seen recently. They do an amazing job of telling a story truly subtly and without big name stars. Well worth checking out. (Grade: B+)

Other Big Releases
Cheap Thrills / Not Rated / Pat Healy, Sara Paxton
A mysterious couple, a local bar, obscene wealth and willing participants make this film a crazy addition to the landscape. The mysterious couple puts different dares in front of two friends, each a bit more twisted and each for a bit more money. How far would you be willing to go for some “cheap thrills”?

Endless Love / Rated PG-13 / Alex Pettyfer, Gabriella Wilde
Jade is a girl who has always done what is right. When she gets a taste of those simple things that she hasn’t been allowed to partake in, she likes it. Despite her father’s attempts, Jade is trying to preserve a lasting love.

Gambit / Rated PG-13 / Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz
An art curator has taken years of abuse from his boss but now he decides enough is enough. His plan? Con his boss into buying a fake painting. To execute the plan he must convince an unpredictable rodeo queen to help him sell the story. From writers Joel and Ethan Coen, this is a remake of the 1966 film.
