Sometimes, It’s Good To Be Bad

Animated films have come a long way from when they were simply written off as cartoons for the kids. Disney/Pixar leads the way with titles that get all ages to the theater to see the gems they’ve turned out. But Pixar is not the only place that is turning out quality animated entertainment.

In fact if the new film Despicable Me was labeled as a Pixar title, we would be talking about the truckload of money they planned on counting come Monday morning. Hopefully we can still be talking about that truckload as this is an incredibly fun film.

Steve Carell provides the voice for Gru who is a spy that reminds the viewers of a new hip “Grinch”. He is the world’s most renowned criminal until a new younger version hits the limelight. Vector (Jason Segel) has pulled heists that make Gru’s work pale in comparison. But Gru has a plan to regain the top spot; he’s going to steal the moon.

Now it will take all of his genius to put the plan together. He’ll need his trusty batch of Minions. He’ll even need to play dad to some kids to get into the inner sanctum of the new breed of criminal. Can he succeed in his attempts? Will he change along the way? Can this despicable character unleash a heart of gold?

Despicable Me works on so many levels. The pleasant surprise gets going from the beginning and doesn’t let up. Carell runs through the paces as Gru and exudes every bit of smarminess you would imagine.

Jason Segel is a perfect foil to Carell. The two work off each other well and despite this being an animated film, they really make it feel like two actors making the dialogue their own. The screenplay puts together a fun story that will engage young and old alike.

Let’s face it though, the real reason people want to see this film is the Minions. Part gremlin, part penguin from Madagascar, and all heart, these Minions steal the screen with their voice, actions, and personas that are created. It is worth it just to see these lovable creatures.

If this was a Pixar film, most if not all would be talking about this being one of the most fun animated films of the year. I’m still saying that. Take your kids and enjoy this fun ride through the world of the super villain. Though Gru is a bad guy, he shows us that sometimes, it’s good to be bad!
