Two Sides To Every Story

Every relationship has a starting point; you know that moment where you first saw her, that moment where you decided she was the one, or that moment where you had that first kiss. I remember my first kiss, as I was pinned by my older neighbor, Kristi – I’m talking about you! And I’m sure if you asked both of us, we had very different accounts of what happened. Or there was that first real crush – Lori, third grade, gosh she was cute…then I moved. All of those young relationships have a story, and this is the story of Flipped.

Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) is moving into the neighborhood. Juli (Madeline Carroll) lives across the street from Bryce and immediately has spotted the boy with whom she feels she will have her first kiss. It was love at first site for Juli, and annoyance at first site for Bryce. How could the same scenarios have a very different interpretation?

Ultimately boys and girls see relationships in very different lights and Flipped uses those differences to tell this interesting tale of first love. What is “icky” to one is “beautiful” to the other. Juli tries hard to be in Bryce’s life. Whether it is the fresh eggs that she drops by with or the attempts to get him into her favorite tree, Juli is insistent.
It is Bryce’s grandfather (John Mahoney) who sees something in Juli that Bryce has never noticed. His grandfather sees a girl with a passion and a drive and someone that he wants to know. So it is the relationship that blossom between the grandfather and Juli that teaches Bryce how to look deeper. Will the relationship work?

Rob Reiner knows how to deliver the goods on this coming of age film. We all can relate to the story of first love, and the setting of this film creates it’s own innocence. A simpler time, means simpler problems and that helps drive Flipped to a successful outcome.

The characters work well together and we find ourselves identifying with a story that fascinates while being extremely enjoyable. Innocent misconceptions and hidden agendas make for a delightful narrative.

A perfect film for the whole family to enjoy; Flipped is a pleasant surprise and is a welcome addition to the fall movie season.
