This post is meant to give you some quick capsules on some of the titles that I've not covered in the last week or two.
Why?
Life got in the way -- maybe some day I'll write a book -- I've got great stories to tell about movies and life in general.
But I digress...
Let's do a quick run through some of the titles that we haven't discussed here. Radio folks have heard about them...TV folks have gotten them...just didn't get thigs online here...sorry!
Silver Linings Playbook - Rated R
(Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro)
One of the best movies of the year -- it's not the romantic comedy that it is being marketed to be. Instead, it is an extremely well done story of a family that has a variety of problems, but needs each other to overcome them. It is still funny at times, but sweet and poignant. A-
Rise of the Guardians - Rated PG
(Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman)
What do you get when you have a movie featuring The Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, Jack Frost, The Sandman and The Tooth Fairy along with the Boogeyman - Pitch Black? A lot of fun with some of the most classic kids characters. When the spirit is almost lost, it takes the belief of one child and the desire of all of them to come together and restore the faith of the world in them. This is one that the youngest kids may be a bit scared with, bad dreams are scary after all, but will give you the warm and fuzzy holiday feeling before it's over. B
Life of Pi - Rated PG
(Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan)
From director Ang Lee comes this elegantly told tale of a man and his journey across the ocean. This jouney is on a small boat and with a bengal tiger named Richard Parker. How can one man survive days at sea with the ferocious beast? This is a rare film that I would highly recommend seeing in 3D. It's a gorgeous film for the format. And the story will have you as they wrap it up. May not be something you think you'll like, but the storytelling and visuals is worth the price of admission. B+
Lincoln - Rated PG-13
(Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn)
Quite possibly one of the best films of 2012. Daniel Day-Lewis is a shoe-in for an Oscar nomination for his role as the former President. Director Steven Spielberg takes us through the period after the Gettysburg address through the passage of the amendment to abolish slavery. Day-Lewis embodies everything you think of the former President. The film is solid and will have you loving history again. A/A-
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II - Rated PG-13
(Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson)
Sure, I'm not the target demographic on this one. Sure, I haven't been a fan of the series overall. But if you chop off the first 20 minutes of this film; it's not bad. It's definitely one of the better films in the series. Maybe that has something to do with the changing of a bunch of the later parts of the film from what the book had; but I don't know. Ok, I've said way too much in this space -- but let me add one more thing...I'm team Alice (Ashley Greene rocks). C+
Skyfall - Rated PG-13
(Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes)
James Bond is back and Daniel Craig bring him to us. This new Bond film will start you at breakneck speed with one of the best opening action sequences this year. Then it gets into a really cool story of survival for James and MI6 as a ruthless villain, played by Javier Bardem, finds out the identities of undercover agents everywhere. I really like this Bond film. B+
Wreck-It Ralph - Rated PG
(John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer)
Video game lovers unite, Wreck-It Ralph takes you inside the game to show you that video game characters have feelings too! Ralph is tired of being the bad guy and heads off to get a medal of his own. Along the way he meets many colorful characters and finds out more about himself. This is fun, quick, funny and smart. I love the interactions between the characters and the story is a classic. A-
Flight - Rated R
(Denzel Washington, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman)
Denzel Washington has problems in his own personal life that he solves through the bottle. But he never anticipated that those problems would include crashing a plane, but saving the bulk of the passengers. After a devisatating plane crash that heralds him as a hero pilot, further investigation uncovers that he drank on the day of the crash. Could it have been prevented? Or did he save the lives of a hundred passengers by his talents as a pilot. Denzel is perfectly awesome in the film and the plane crash is incredibly well done. But the film seemed to be missing something, and the marketing is a bit misleading. Although it is very good, it just misses being great. B
Cloud Atlas - Rated R
(Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent)
An amazing journey through time as the stories that span thousands of years intertwine and take the same actors through various forms over time. This is a beautiful film that is stitched together to make the stories actions and reactions show the interdependence of us all. Long but solid, some may feel lost but I felt quite satisfied. B
That's if for now....Hopefully we can stay ahead of things for the rest of the year!!! Enjoy the movies!

Ahh, Wednesday …Hump Day they call it…the middle of the week…it’s downhill from here.
But today brings with it something really special – No nothing in the delivery column today…but I did have the screening for the new and final Twilight film, Breaking Dawn – Part 2.
Those of you who have read my earlier reviews or listened as I’ve discussed will know, I haven’t been the biggest fan of this series. There were a couple in the beginning that were ok, but Breaking Dawn - Part 1 was not fun to endure, at lest for me.
So after a busy day with no dinner…I waited in the way too long line for a bucket of Popcorn (yes…a very healthy dinner). And marched into the theater to experience the newest Twilight film.
In fact I sat next to a couple of my local colleagues and they had not seen all the films….I had…(is that a good thing, or a bad thing???)
Before the film got underway, my musing was about why they didn’t go the 3D route on the film. Everyone is doing it, and they are going to sell a zillion tickets regardless of the price….why no money grab on this one? (I said it half in jest, but it is a good question).While the first 20 minutes of what followed reminded me of everything I really disliked about Part 1, it did find a way out of the darkness and into the light.
When the film was over one of the two colleagues even clapped wildly…(I don’t know if he was mocking others who did or really enthused…but I like to say he was enthused….makes for a better story).
And so it was over.
The movie, the series and another night at the movies had all concluded around 9PM that evening.
On the way out, I was greeted by the sign outside the theater that displayed what we had just seen….but it wasn’t true!

I know my mid 80s dance movies…and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 was Breakin’. (Again…not sure whether that was a bad thing or not.)
I finally determined I’m Team Alice for the Twilightfilms….Ashley Greene, I can’t wait to see what you do next.
You’ll have to wait for the review to see what I thought of it…but it was no Breaking Dawn: Part 1.
Tomorrow I get to see something I’ve really been waiting for, Silver Linings Playbook. Plus ????

30 Day With The Movies

Day 26
So the day had one screening in the theater on the schedule, but that wasn't going to work for me.
Sometimes, especially at this time of year, being a husband, a dad and a film critic (plus other work that yours truly does to pay the bills) can make me need to be more places than possible at the same time.
The screening was an early evening meeting with Red Dawn. Sorry, I'm a fan of the delightfully kitschy original....WOLVERINES, so I was looking forward to see where this new film would go. BUT, sometimes it's more important to play the other roles...so instead of getting out to Red Dawn, the journey was to the "Go West" Fine Arts Night at my daughter's school.
She was ecstatic to see me sneak in just before their class lined up to come to the gymnasium. And I was elated to spend the evening with someone so special. Sure she's only in third grade; but the memory of this Fine Arts Night will ... I'M SURE ... long outlast my memory of Red Dawn.
And so I live with my decision...and I'm comfortable with it! Sorry FilmDistrict and Red Dawn. Thanks for the opportunity to attend the screening and I regretfully apologize for not getting out to see your film.
Now...when I arrived home, after this early evening bonanza. (with of course a stop at the local Culver's restaurant for ice cream) I was greeted by a slew of packages. I guess awards season is in full bloom.
The packages that waited from me contained a total of 35 different films. The bulk of the films were from the good folks at Magnolia and Magnet. There was also a small package from Oscilliscope.
Now are all the films in the package award worthy? Probably not...but the awesome thing is that these smaller studios see the importance of getting copies in our hands. They are proud of all their titles, the good, the bad and the ugly. That is AWESOME! I applaud the efforts of Magnolia, Magnet and Oscilliscope. I've long said that many of the studios could learn from this that just being able to see, or take another look at titles released earlier in the year is a benefit that we don't forget.
And so it goes...the day was filled more with delivered movies and family time....but I'll have big news tomorrow....as the screening of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 is on my agenda....what will I think? Well my earlier films reviews are well known...and have led to angst among some fans...but I am all for being open minded for what this might feature.
So there ya have it...not every day is a whirlwind at the movies, but every day in LIFE is a whirlwind of it's own.
